The following studies provide background to the importance of women in local government and propose actions to increase representation in local government. They also include current supports available to women entering into or currently involved in local politics 

National Women's Council of Ireland

The National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) commissioned a study "Women beyond the Dáil: more women in local government" in order to understand the barriers faced by women in running for and getting elected to local office. 

Dept. of Public Expenditure and Reform

The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform published "Our Public Service 2020: Selected Indicators and Trends". This report covers all aspects of public service and Pillar 3 deals with gender balance in government and public bodies. 

Immigrant Council of Ireland

The Immigrant Council of Ireland commissioned a report "The Experience of Migrant Candidates in the 2019 Local Elections". This report gives invaluable insights and data around migrant participation in local elections, political parties and the wider community. The report highlights the barriers experienced by candidates and offers guidance to increase representation. 

Women for Election

Women for Election is a not-for-profit organisation that encourages and supports women in Ireland to run for politics. They are non-partisan and offer support to women from all walks of life and political philosophies. They run a number of courses on topics such as campaigning, canvassing and the skills to succeed.
