BUILT HERITAGE INVESTMENT SCHEME 2027 (Including Historic Thatched Building Stream)
On Tuesday, July 28, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, announced the opening of applications for the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2027.
Individual grants will range from €2,500 to €50,000. An overview of the scheme and its eligibility criteria can be found in the BHIS 2027 Circular. The aim of the BHIS is to provide financial assistance to owners in carrying out appropriate conservation works to their historic properties which are Protected Structures and/or located within an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA).
BHIS also includes the Historic Thatched Buildings Stream which is intended to support thatched buildings in need of repair and conservation works. Grant funding up to a max. €20,000 is available.
BHIS supports the basic principles of good conservation practice focusing on the repair of historic fabric, the use of traditional materials and the sensitive introduction of new elements that do not compromise the significance and functionality of the building. BHIS 2027 will be administered by Irenie McLoughlin, Architectural Conservation Officer of South Dublin County Council on behalf of the Department.
Applications must be made using Form A, please see Guidance booklet and application checklist to assist with completing Form A.
A suitable Method Statement drawn up by a competent conservation professional must be submitted by the applicant and give details of how conservation/repair works will be carried out. Under the BHIS the total value of all public funding provided must not exceed 80% of the total project cost including funding received from other public agencies and government departments.
BHIS is a very competitive funding stream, and unfortunately no applicant can be guaranteed a set amount of funding under the scheme in any given year.

Successful applicants will be notified in January 2027.

HISTORIC STRUCTURES FUND (HSF) 2027
After another successful year of completed projects under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF), Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversityhas announced the Historic Structures Fund for 2027 This will be administered by Irenie McLoughlin, Architectural Conservation Officer, LUPT Dept, South Dublin County Council on behalf of the Department.
The primary focus of the Historic Structures Fund is on caring for and restoring historic structures and buildings for the benefit of communities and the public.
For 2027 the Historic Structures Fund will offer grants from €50,000 up to €200,000 only, and focus on larger enhancement, refurbishment or reuse projects involving heritage structures, where:
- A clear community or public benefit has been demonstrated, or
- A clear residential benefit has been demonstrated (such projects must be advanced through the planning process as necessary)
Applications must include all the required documentation listed below:
- Completed Application Form A
- Comprehensive Method Statement for the Works (refer to guidance for further information on the content of a method statement)
- Application Checklist
Circular HSF/2026 ‘Historic Structures Fund’ sets out the operation of the scheme and includes the relevant application forms. The Circular should be read carefully. There is also a specific guidance document to assist applicants in applying under the HSF Scheme (HSF 2026 Guidance Booklet for Applicants). Note: Applicants can apply under both the Historic Structures Fund and the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, however applicants cannot avail of funding under both.
