My Open Library (MOL) is a service that offers extended library opening hours by allowing access to registered My Open Library members outside of staffed hours.
You must first attend an in-person Health and Safety Induction to gain access to MOL Membership – contact staff at lucanlibrary@sdublincoco.ie to ask about an induction. This is separate to your Library membership.
How does it work?
- Staffed hours continue as normal, but My Open Library members will be able to access the library outside of staffed hours between 8am and 10pm every day, including bank holidays and weekends.
- My Open Library users must undergo an induction to register for the service and adhere to the terms and conditions of use.
- Only patrons over 16 years of age may register for My Open Library. Patrons aged 16 and 17 must have parental consent to register and their parent must also register for My Open Library and attend the induction.
- Patrons under 16 can only enter during My Open Library hours when accompanied by a parent/guardian/carer who is a registered My Open Library member. They must be accompanied at all times.
- The library is monitored by CCTV and Bidvest Noonan security company.
What services are available?
Although staff are not available during MOL hours, most services are still available in a self-service capacity.

Return, borrow, or renew items using the self-service kiosks.

However, you cannot:
Borrow games, as these must be issued by staff.
Use the 3D printer.

Entering the Building
To access the building during MOL hours, you must be a registered MOL member and have completed your Health and Safety Induction with a staff member.
Note: If your account expires, or if you have missing/overdue items on your account, you will not be able to enter the library during MOL hours.
When entering the building, you should:
- Scan the barcode on your library card by placing it under the red line under the barcode reader beside the entrance door.
- You will then hear a beep and the screen on the barcode reader will prompt you to enter your PIN. Enter your 4-digit PIN.
- The door will open automatically. Enter the library and wait for the door to close fully behind you before proceeding.
You are responsible for ensuring that no-one else enters the building using your library card.
If entering the building with other MOL members, each person should scan their card and enter separately.
If someone else enters the building as you enter/exit, please inform the library staff as soon as possible.
My Open Library members are asked to take responsibility for entering and exiting the building alone on their card and must report any and all instances of tailgating by emailing staff with the date and time at lucanlibrary@sdublincoco.ie
Exiting the Building
If you wish to stay in the library after staffed hours end, you must exit the building and re-enter by scanning your library card after staff have cleared the building.
You must exit the building when MOL hours finish at 10pm. You will hear an audio announcement to warn you that the library will soon close.
The alarm will set automatically at 10pm and anyone remaining in the building will activate the alarm.
