No Second Chances Buckle Up or Live with the Shame

22 Apr 25

South Dublin County Council is happy to support our colleagues in An Garda Síochána during their annual National Life Saver Week campaign by focusing on and promoting the use of Seatbelts.

South Dublin County Council urges anyone travelling in a car, whether driving the car or travelling as a passenger, to always buckle up and wear your seatbelt.

The Council’s Road Safety Officer Orlaith Maguire highlights that research on attitudes to wearing seatbelts by adults aged 35 and under shows that “forgetting” to wear a seat belt was the main reason for not wearing it.  Other research carried out by independent research on behalf of the RSA, found that 26%  of women admitted to previously having worn the shoulder strap of their seatbelt under their arm, rather than on their shoulder.  All drivers should get into the practice of asking their passengers to put on their seatbelt to help reduce fatalities and serious life changing injuries on Irish roads

Did you know

  • The Driver of the car is responsible to ensure anyone aged 17 or under is wearing a seatbelt
  • Rear seat passengers unbelted come through at a force of 3 times their own bodyweight should the car have to stop suddenly, seriously injuring or killing the person in the front of the car
  • 3 Penalty Points of not wearing a seatbelt
  • 120 Euro Fixed Charge notice fine

Could you live with the shame?  There are no second chances.
