SDCC launches 'Respect Our School Wardens’ Campaign

South Dublin County Council has just launched a new road safety awareness campaign aimed at improving driver behaviour at school warden crossings and reminding members of the public that it is a legal requirement to stop when instructed to do so by a school warden.  ‘Respect Our School Wardens’ is a new video campaign reminding all Drivers that ‘Stop means Stop’.

Mayor of South Dublin Cllr Francis Timmons said:

‘‘I am delighted to be launching South Dublin County Council’s ‘Respect Our School Warden’ campaign.  Our School Wardens arethere to ensure that primary school students can cross public roads safely on their way to and from school. They play an essential role in helping children get to school safely during busy school drop off and pick up times.  So please show some respect and obey our school wardens."

 

Road Safety Officer at South Dublin County Council Orlaith Maguiresaid:

"This is a great new road safety video awareness campaign  reminding members of the public to ‘ Respect Our School Wardens’, through visibility, media engagement and our digital and social media channels.  Unfortunately, some of our School Wardens experience on a daily basis, drivers refusing to stop, or drivers travelling at an inappropriate speed, they also encounter verbal abuse from members of the public. ’  This is not acceptable behaviour, and we are asking all drivers to respect our school wardens."

Inspector Michael Houlihan, Garda National Roads Policing Bureausaid:

"I am delighted to be supporting this very important road safety initiative by South Dublin County Council.  I would like to remind members of the public that the only people legally able to stop traffic are members of An Gárda Síochana or a School Warden. Parking on double yellow lines or across a school entrance is a fine of €40. Dangerous parking is a fine of €60 plus 3 penalty points.  Failure to obey the instruction of a school warden is a fine of €160 plus 2 penalty points. So please take heed and ‘Respect Our School Wardens’"
