🍂 SDCC Celebrating Nature’s Free Resource onNational Tree Day 2026 🌳
Today we're celebrating the trees that enrich our communities, support wildlife, improve air quality and help create healthier, greener environments for everyone.
As autumn colours begin to appear remember leaves are not waste, they're nature's gold! Before reaching for the bin, consider how these autumn treasures can continue supporting nature:
🪱Leaf mould is nutrient-rich, improves soil structure, retains moisture, creates air spaces for roots and supports healthy soil ecosystems as earthworms and fungi love it! Simply gather damp leaves in a wire cage/breathable bag and let nature do the work
🌿 Fallen leaves can be applied directly onto bare soil; protecting against erosion and compaction, helping retain moisture and suppress weeds
🦔 Leaf piles in quiet corners provide important overwintering habitats for hedgehogs, frogs, caterpillars and other invertebrates, while also supplying birds with foraging opportunities and nesting materials
🌱 Leaves also make an excellent winter insulating layer for raised beds, vegetable patches and allotments
By making the most of fallen leaves, we can reduce waste, improve soil health, support biodiversity and embrace circular economy principles right on our doorstep.
Celebrate our trees today and give those fallen leaves a second life!
