Hellfire

02 Aug 24

Hellfire is a development led by South Dublin County Council, supported by Coillte.

The Project is intended to serve as a gateway to the wider leisure and tourism opportunities available in the Dublin Mountains. It will offer visitors a place of orientation and interpretation, informing them about the geography, archaeology and history of the area – both of the immediate vicinity around Montpelier Hill, Massy’s Wood, and the Hellfire Club, as well as the wider Dublin Mountains region to the south.

The Project is now progressing to detailed design and to inform this stage of the Project, specialists have been engaged, and to further inform this stage of the Project, specialists have been engaged, Abarta Heritage, to conduct Archaeological Testing and The Discovery Programme, to carry out non-invasive 3D Surveys within the Project area, specifically at the Hellfire Club.

The Archaeological Testing will help us determine the nature and condition of the earth flooring that exists currently on the interior of the Hellfire Club while the non-invasive 3D Surveys will help us identify megalithic art, if this exists, on the Masonry within the building. This data is important to allow the conservation interventions to the Hellfire Club to be designed accurately and sensitively while protecting underlying archaeological features. These works are being conducted in accordance with best practice and the planning permission requirements and will be overseen by an Archaeologist.

During the works, it may be necessary to temporarily restrict access to the Hellfire Club to the public for health and safety reasons. Such closures shall only be for the minimum period of time needed to complete the works at that location.

The Archaeological Testing will occur from 12th of August 2024 until 16th of August 2024, while the non-invasive 3D Surveys will be conducted from 28th of August 2024 until 30th of August 2024.
