Clonburris Stage 2A Joint Infrastructure Works – Surface Water Outfall

Griffeen Avenue surface water road crossing

Emergency works required to protect road users and the public.
The Clonburris Stage 2A Surface Water Outfall Works have commenced in the Griffeen area of South Dublin
County Council. The initial heavy civil engineering works to install storm water attenuation areas and the
necessary upgraded storm outfall shall be undertaken over the next few months in the areas shown on the above
image.
Clonmel Enterprises are the main Contractor for the works and have undertaken the necessary risk assessments
associated with all aspects of their planned work with regards to Griffeen Avenue. Of particular risk is the safe
interaction with and management of the 600 pupils due to attend the new Griffeen Community College starting
on the 24th August. A key interaction point will be during the installation of the storm outfall as it crosses Griffeen
Avenue. During these works heavy plant and materials will be traversing the school access road and navigating
the roundabout to install the road crossing in the red boxed area shown above.
The Project Team have identified the best mitigation measure to remove risk to the public and road users is to
seek an emergency road closure in advance of the schools returning on the 24th August. Clonmel are eager to
accelerate their works and advance the road crossing element to mitigate interactions with the pupils during their
access and egress to school.
Main Details of this proposal:
➢ Start date is 12th August for 5 days over the weekend.
➢ Griffeen Avenue to be closed between Grange Castle Road and Griffeen Road.
➢ Works consist of a deep storm water sewer crossing the existing road within the area shown above.
➢ The storm sewer pipes are 1050mm diameter precast concrete pipes.
Traffic mitigation measures list and procedure for works
➢ Traffic Management Plans to be submitted to SDCC for approval.
➢ Variable Messaging Signs to be erected in advance of the works.
➢ Diversion route via Castle Road and Griffeen Way.
➢ Road will be swept as required to ensure the road is free of debris at entrance and exit points.
