International Day of Persons with Disabilities and PurpleLights25 Press Release

03 Dec 25

Purple Lights 2025

Today, Wednesday, 3rd December, South Dublin County Council is lighting up purple in a display of solidarity for International Day for People with Disabilities.

The Purple Lights Campaign highlights the 1 in 5 people in Ireland living with a disability, moving the conversation from "awareness" to "celebration and visibility." The campaign coincides with the UN observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, established to promote the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Gary Kearney, founder of the Purple Lights campaign, emphasises that the initiative is about reclaiming narrative.

“Purple Lights is a celebration of our lives,” says Kearney. “Too often we’re pitied or not seen. When we light up the country, we’re marking our own space in the world and embracing our uniqueness”.
