There are 425 Council allotments of varying sizes at 4 locations, ranging in size from 50 square metres up to 250 square metres.

Cost of renting an allotment:
- €1 per square metre with a reduction for applicants whose sole income is one of the following:-
- Job Seekers Allowance/Benefit
- OAP Contributory/Non Contributory (if on private pension not entitled)
- Disability Allowance/Benefit

You will be placed on a waiting list for your preferred site and as soon as an allotment becomes available you will be notified.

Why have an allotment?
An allotment can provide:-
- A good source of affordable food – you know the origins of
- You can grow your own fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers
- Working an allotment is a healthy physical recreation for all age groups
- Social outlet – People from all age groups and a wide variety of social backgrounds use the allotments and they all learn from each other through gardening together
- Allotments have an educational value – a number of schools and educational groups have allotments
How much time will it take and will it be a lot of work?
It can be hard work and you should spend up to six hours per week on the plots to keep them in good condition. Failure to work 75% of a plot may lead to a licence being terminated and the plot being re-let.
How much does it cost?
The annual rent ranges from €50.00 to €250.00 depending on the size of plot. There is a reduction for anyone on social welfare (proof must be provided). There is a key deposit of €50.00 payable when you receive your keys. This money is refunded when you leave back your allotment key to the Council Offices, provided the allotment is cleared to a satisfactory condition for re-let.
Is there a waiting list and how do I join the waiting list?
The demand for allotments has increased significantly in the last number of years. There are waiting lists for Tymon Park, Corkagh Park and Mill Lane allotments. If you would like to apply for an allotment please see details on page one. Please note that only one application per household is accepted.
How long will I have to wait for an allotment?
There isn’t a specific timeframe, the waiting period will depend on how many plots are relinquished each year.
How long do I have the allotment for?
Once you have been allocated an allotment you can continue to renew your Licence Agreement annually, however, if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions, your Licence Agreement may be terminated and your plot re-let.
What facilities are provided on the allotment sites?
The allotment sites have a range of facilities including fencing and gates, piped water supplies, toilets, car parking and storage containers.
Can I keep animals on my plot?
No animals are permitted on the allotment plot.
Can I put up a shed?
Structures including Sheds, Polytunnels and Glasshouses are permitted on allotment sites, subject to conditions.
Can I have a bonfire on my allotment?
No, bonfires are not permitted
Can I bring my children up to the allotment to help?
Yes children are allowed on the allotment but they must be supervised and not cause a nuisance to other plot holders.
Can I get someone in to help me with my allotment?
You can have relatives in to assist with working your allotment, however, the allotment cannot be sublet to anyone.
