Exceptional Water Demand in Greater Dublin Area

17 Jan 25

At the moment, demand in the GDA is at an all time high, peaking at record levels of over 659 million litres per day on Monday 13th January 2025. The freezing weather
experienced last week, followed by a rapid thaw has resulted in an unprecedented number of water-main bursts and leaks putting significant upward pressure on
demand.

The Water Operations crews have been working around the clock to repair the large number of water-main bursts and we have mobilised additional Contractor crews to
assist with bringing demand back to acceptable levels. Despite these efforts, the likelihood of significant Water Supply Disruption is becoming a real possibility. This
could present itself as low pressure to large areas and/or night-time water restrictions similar to the measures that had to be taken after Storm Emma in 2018.
In addition to leaks and bursts on the public network, we believe that leakage in private water networks in businesses, housing estates, apartment blocks, parks etc.
is a significant contributing factor to the spike in demand.

Everyone can help drive down demand by reporting leaks in public areas to us and taking some simple steps to conserve water at home. For more information visit https://buff.ly/4jhACmh
