PALs (Physical Activity Leaders): Empowering Older Adults to Lead Community Fitness
The PALs initiative equips older adults with the skills to lead sports and physical activity sessions within their local groups and communities. As a trained PAL, you’ll be confident to guide enjoyable and inclusive activities like short exercise routines, fun games, simple dances, and traditional sports like pitch and toss or bowling. PALs are active in various community settings, from active retirement groups and the Irish Countrywomen’s Association to Men’s Sheds, local sports clubs, and community centres.
Program Structure
To become a certified PAL, participants attend six interactive workshops, each lasting five hours. The sessions include both practical and theoretical elements to ensure comprehensive knowledge and skill-building. Best of all, the PALs training is completely free, thanks to partnerships with Local Sports Partnerships and the HSE.
Ongoing Support and Networking
Once trained, PALs have regular opportunities to connect with others through refresher workshops and sports festivals. These gatherings allow PALs to exchange ideas, discuss experiences, and stay updated on best practices in leading physical activities for older adults.
