Inclusive Horse Riding

Fettercairn Youth Horse Project

Several children are riding horses in a row along a sandy riding arena, each wearing helmets and warm clothing. Adults walk alongside the ponies for guidance and support. The setting is bright and clear, with a wooden fence surrounding the arena and houses visible in the background. The atmosphere is calm, focused, and positive, promoting confidence, balance, and connection through inclusive horse riding activities.

The Fettercairn Youth Horse Project is a unique program based in Fettercairn that provides horse-riding opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Designed for children aged 6 and older, the program accommodates participants under 13 stone in weight and a maximum height of 5ft 3, ensuring a safe and supportive experience for everyone involved.

Horse riding offers a range of physical, emotional, and social benefits for children with additional needs. It helps to foster emotional bonds with animals, providing a calming and therapeutic experience. Riding also has a positive impact on sensory processing, helping to reduce irritability and improve mood. For children with hyperactivity, the program provides a structured activity that can help promote focus and self-regulation. Additionally, horse riding can support the development of language skills, improving word fluency and communication abilities.

The Fettercairn Youth Horse Project is more than just a riding program; it is a space where children can grow in confidence, explore new sensory experiences, and enjoy the unique connection between humans and horses in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
