PPAL's People with Intellectual Disability Physical Activity Leaders
What is the PPALs Initiative?
PPALs empower older adults with intellectual disability (ID) to take a leadership role in promoting physical activity among their peers. The initiative aims to increase the skills and confidence of people with ID to lead their peers in a range of games and activities designed to improve functional fitness.
It involves a nine-week training course that covers:
- For Staff and Family Support: One session on how to support the PPALs Leaders.
- For Participants: Two sessions about Ageing with Confidence and six sessions on physical activity.
Following the training course, PPALs commit to leading physical activity sessions with their peer groups.
Who is best suited to become a PPAL? Older adults (30+ years) with an intellectual disability who are:
- Interested in physical activity and sport.
- Comfortable working with others.
- Available to attend a six-week training course.
- Can follow instructions
Expectations.
- To attend training on a weekly basis, plus refresher sessions
- To lead physical activity sessions
