World Ocean Day 2026

World Ocean Day 2026

World Ocean day takes place every year on the 8th of June, The World Ocean Day 2026 action theme - Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Plane - will guide global action over the coming years. World Ocean Day is a reminder that protecting our oceans begins with how we manage water here at home. Clean, well-managed rivers and drainage systems play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine environments, as everything that flows through our communities ultimately reaches the sea.

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has been actively investing in Flood Alleviation Schemes and Integrated Constructed Wetlands to reduce the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas. These projects often include upgrading drainage networks, restoring natural floodplains, and improving river channels. By managing water more effectively during heavy rainfall, these schemes help prevent pollutants, debris, and untreated runoff from being washed into rivers and, eventually, the ocean.

In addition to protecting homes and infrastructure, these measures support healthier waterways by slowing water flow and allowing sediments and contaminants to settle before reaching coastal areas. This contributes to improved water quality and healthier marine ecosystems.

On World Ocean Day, it is worth recognising how local efforts—such as flood prevention and sustainable water management—have a meaningful impact far beyond our communities. Protecting our oceans starts upstream, and initiatives like those led by SDCC demonstrate how proactive planning can safeguard our shared blue planet.
