Integrated Constructed Wetlands (ICW) are designed to treat water runoff. ICW's, which look like shallow ponds, use naturally occurring vegetative processes to treat water, removing harmful impurities and discharging cleaner, purer water. They contribute to the surrounding amenity and biodiversity value of the site and wider landscape.
In South Dublin we are developing a number of ICW's to treat contaminated surface water - four ICW's are at various stages of development in South Dublin.
Integrated Constructed Wetlands currently in development as part of the Life project and the Flood Alleviation Schemes will also demonstrate how to combine nature and biodiversity with existing land use.
