Public open space including parks is one of South Dublin County’s most precious resources. It has a particular role in relation to the setting and function of the urban neighbourhoods of the County and is central to the delivery of sustainable communities and the promotion of biodiversity.
It also allows for nature-based solutions for surface water management (such as Sustainanle Drainage Systems), the improvement of water quality, and the mitigation of climate change. Access to good quality open spaces and opportunities for sport and recreation also make an essential contribution to the health and well-being of communities.
A number of strategies relevant to public open space, parks and recreation have been prepared by the Council including the TeenSpace Programme (2021) and Sports Pitch Strategy (2020).
Consultants were appointed in 2020 to develop South Dublin County Council's Parks and Open Space Strategy. The draft strategy is currently being prepared and public consultation is expected to proceed in early 2023.
