Scoil Maelruain School Street Launch
Scoil Maelruain School Street Launch
SDCC, working with Scoil Maelruain JNS & SNS, launched the first “school street” in the county on Wednesday November 22nd. The mayor was on hand to cut the ribbon along with the principals of both schools.
The school street is on the cul-de-sac section of Old Bawn Avenue where car access will be limited to residents and school staff during school drop-off and collection times. This will reduce danger to children and parents from drivers. The school street will also provide a calmer and more welcoming environment for all children and parents at the school gate.
This initiative has had strong support from the school community, residents, and An Garda Siochana and has been developed with Safe Routes to Schools and the NTA.
As a first step, the school street has been established using new road signs. In 2024, additional traffic calming and school-themed placemaking measures will be installed at the front of school, further improving safety and emphasising the school function of the area. There will also be upgrades to the approaches to the school which will calm traffic, improve safety and hopefully increase the already significant number of children and parents walking, wheeling, and cycling to school.
