Old Bawn to Ballyboden (Formally known as Tallaght to Knocklyon)

Old Bawn to Ballyboden 

"The Oldbawn to Ballyboden scheme is made up of three projects:

  • Firhouse Road Active Travel Improvement Scheme
  • Knocklyon to Ballyboden Active Travel Scheme
  • Old Bawn Road Active Travel Scheme

It was previously known as Oldbawn to Ballyboden and Tallaght to Knocklyon, and will connect walking and cycling infrastructure from Tallaght to Ballyboden via Old Bawn Road, Firhouse Road, Knocklyon Road, Templeroan Road and Ballyboden Way.

Firhouse Road Active Travel Improvement Scheme (Phase 1)

Upgrades to existing walking and cycle facilities on Firhouse Road from east of the Firhouse Road/Old Bawn Road/Killinniny Road junction to west of the M50 and from the Firhouse Road/Ballycullen Road junction to the existing M50 pedestrian bridge via. Ballycullen Road and Castlefield Avenue. Upgrades to pedestrian and cycling facilities in the vicinity of Scoil Maelruain and St. Dominic’s National School will also be carried out under this project and the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme. Part of Scoil Maelruain and St. Dominic’s will be constructed ahead of the main contract under SRTS.

These works are being delivered under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994

This project is currently at Phase 5 Detailed Design and Procurement Stage.  It will go to tender over the coming months and construction will commence in 2025.

Public consultation was carried out as part of Oldbawn to Ballyboden Phase 1 (including a sections of Knocklyon Road and Old Bawn Road moved to phases 2 and 3 respectively) ran between 21/04/2023 and 19/05/2023.

Scoil Maelruain was subject to public consultation 'Old Bawn Avenue School Street' from 13/07/2023 to 10/08/2023.

Knocklyon to Ballyboden Active Travel Scheme (Phase 2)

New and upgraded walking and cycling facilities from the eastern end of Firhouse Road Active Travel Improvement Scheme to Talyor’s Lane and Edmondstown Road via Knocklyon Road, Dargle Wood Park, Templeroan Road, Scholarstown Road, Ballyboden Way and Edmonstown Road up to junction with Scholarstown Road. 

This project is currently at Phase 3 Preliminary Design Stage (see project phase diagram below).

This project will be delivered through the Part 8 process.

This project will be subject to a Part 8 consultation in 2025. It was covered in two public consultations. Oldbawn to Ballyboden Phase 1 from 21/04/2023 to 19/05/2023, and Oldbawn to Ballyboden Phase 2 from 14/07/2023 until 11/08/2023. Links to the consultations here:

Old Bawn Road Active Travel Scheme (Phase 3)

Walking and cycling upgrades to Old Bawn Road from south of the N81 to an upgraded Firhouse Road/Old Bawn Road/Killinniny Road junction.

This project is currently at Phase 3 Preliminary Design Stage. 

This project will be delivered through the Part 8 process.

This project will be subject to a Part 8 consultation in 2025. Part of the project from south of the N81 to north of the Firhouse Road West junction was covered in the Oldbawn to Ballyboden Phase 1public consultation from 21/04/2023 to 19/05/2023. Link to consultation portal here:

Phase-4

The EIA and AA screening decision was taken on 26/04/2022 and recorded on the SDCC Chief Executive Order system.
