Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway

Phase-6

Walking and Cycling facilities to connect Grand and Royal canals and will have approx. 6 Km of cycle route. Phase 1 of this project is called Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway and will run from Grand Canal to Lucan Village.

The Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway Scheme Part 8 Consultation commenced 08/09/2022 and has ended 21/10/2022.

The Part 8 planning was approved by the full council in November 2022.

The decision to proceed with this scheme was taken on 16th December 2022 and recorded on the SDCC Chief Executive Order system

The EIA and AA screening decision was taken on 9th September 2022 and recorded on the SDCC Chief Executive Order system.

The project was divided into 3 phases:

  • Phase 1a: Grand Canal to N4
  • Phase 1b: N4 to Lucan
  • Phase 1c: Bridges Upgrade and Boardwalk

 

Phase 1a: Grand Canal to N4:

Project Status: Construction of the project are expected to begin before the end of 2024. This will include the upgrade and improvement of paths and features within Griffeen Valley Park and improved/new crossings of Griffeen Avenue and Old Esker Lane. Construction is expected to be completed Summer 2025.

 

Phase 1b: N4 to Lucan:

On Hold.

 

Phase 1c: Bridges Upgrade and Boardwalk

The design team is appointed and developing the detailed design for the replacement of bridges and the new boardwalk. Ground and Structural investigations were carried out to inform the detailed design of the bridges within Griffeen Valley Park and Sarsfield Park in Q3 2024. Construction is expected near the end of 2025.

 

Phase 2 Lucan Village to Royal Canal

This is a joint project with FCC. SDCC and FCC have been working with the consultant to refine and finalise the report. The final report will be presented to Councillors.
